Let me share a little story.
I’m sure everyone has a childhood crush. Be it your neighbour that lives down the street, your aunt’s kid and yadayada.
I happened to crushed on a girl long ago back in Jakarta. She was this pretty little girl every little boy would ever dreamed of even holding her hands! Her name was.. well i think i shouldn’t disclose it, but let’s name her Natalie.
Natalie is my Mum’s godsis’ sister’s daughter. She is 9 years ahead but ever stunning in my eyes. It’s like, staring at a box of diamonds that never stop sparkling, never stop mesmerizing. Yes, that is Natalie.
Just as when we grew up a little, and I migrated to Singapore, living life the way it is, Mum delivered the greatest news earlier today, telling me that Natalie and her family would be in town for a visit. I mean, I’m not in love with her, but that childhood crush thing? It’s real for shit! Imagine me stunned with my jaws wide open, all the sudden blackout and disappearing into another dimension with all those things swirling around in every cartoons.. that kind of hypnotic feeling? Jubilant.
You see, Natalie has 2 other sisters who are twins and were all equally pretty, but Natalie stood out the most, but let’s get back to the story.
Just about 2 hours ago, the girl you dreamed of holding her hands, swinging it all casually and simply smiling to each other, walked into your house. With a kid. All the wild guesses and heartbreaks, she is married with a child. The look in her eyes was still as special and intimidating. I was taken aback by Natalie’s beauty. You know, that kind of feeling.. someone you’ve been liking as a boy is now married? Yeap. Overwhelmed, but luckily for me, I was certainly cool enough to force a decent smile.
Her son was 2 years old, and Natalie asked him to address me as “jiujiu” (it means uncle in mandarin). As much as I was trying to recover from my state of shock, it didn’t helped to think that i actually have a nephew, already?! Her son was the cutest thing ever, but nothing beats the girl who grew into such a beautiful lady. As when we talked and all, and bid goodbye.. I felt like it was almost as heart wrenching as burying my dead hamster, the tight strain your beat machine feels as she walks out the door.
Now kids, it is always important to know what you learned at the end of the day. It was a beautiful moment, but what was more beautiful was seeing how happy your dream significant other is with her life. You can’t have everything in the world, even if it appears better years later, you know it is better living without it because, at least there is something to appreciate and smile about at the end of the day. This may sound cliche, but.. like raindrops, as sad as it may picture, a rainbow will surface after that. Right?
